We all want to find the treasure and get the reward! Our treasure is our employees and our reward is that they perform well and remain with us long term.
But how do we do that? We need a plan, a map, an outline, a step-by-step process, a formula……But what is it?
How do we reach the “X” on the treasure map…….where we have good employee retention?
Like every good plan, we have to take the first step. In order to improve employee retention we need to make sure we have the right people and manage them in the right way. So:
- Who are the ‘right’ team players?
- How do we manage them in the ‘right’ way?
Step 1 Hire the ‘Right’ People — Those That Want To Do The Job
The right people are those individuals that will remain well motivated even though they will be monitored and pushed to high levels of achievement. Not just ones that will “show up”. They will want to take ownership and make a contribution to the success of the area in which they work. Use a screening process that looks carefully at applicant’s personality, motivations, and thinking style. This will ensure that you will get the right person for the job. One that will fit the description above.
Step 2 – Once You Hire The Right Person — Manage Them In The ‘Right’ Way
Now you have the right person – how do you manage them in the right way? There are many things to consider.
- Have you set clear goals?
- Do they have the resources to meet those goals?
- Do you have a system in place to monitor their actions?
- Are you guiding them in the pursuit of their goals?
- Have you given them enough time to achieve their goals?
If you have answered YES to all of the above questions and your new hire has not been successful in reaching their goals, then you need to remove them and give them a chance to be successful somewhere else.
Now it is time to start over…….keep repeating the above actions and keep your revolving door moving until you get an individual that will be a valuable, productive, successful member of your team. You both will win in the end.
This is the Treasure Map to Employee Retention.
I shall be writing more on this topic and getting into more of the specifics of the Screening, Hiring, and Management Process in subsequent Blogs. Hopefully you will enjoy them.
