There is an adage in selling that if you don’t ask you don’t get. It is also the case the great salespeople ask early and often. Unfortunately, many people that run nonprofits are not great salespeople. Consequently, they find it difficult to ask. Yet, the truth is that when the leader of a foundation makes it clear to the members of the board that they must make some financial contribution every year no matter how small or large, then board members typically contribute.
